Managing Expectations

Set realistic goals for shots outside your comfort.

Why it matters

Everybody has shots they hit about half the time. Treating those as reliable is how rounds blow up, and treating them as impossible leaves strokes on the course. Knowing which of your shots are coin flips, specifically, is what lets you plan around them instead of being surprised by them.

How to do it

  1. List your shots honestly and mark each one: reliable, about half, or a long shot.
  2. On the half-and-below shots, aim for the safe outcome rather than the best one.
  3. Plan holes so that your weak shots are not required. Often a different line turns a 50/50 into a routine shot.
  4. Practise the weak ones deliberately, which is where they stop being weak.
  5. Re-assess monthly. The list moves, and an out-of-date list is as misleading as no list.

Common mistakes

Planning a hole around a shot you hit half the time.Find the route that uses your reliable shots. There usually is one, and it is usually a stroke cheaper.
Avoiding weak shots entirely, including in practice.Avoid them in rounds and seek them out in practice. That is how the list changes.
Assuming a shot you hit in practice transfers immediately.Practice rates drop under pressure. Give yourself a margin before promoting a shot to reliable.

Key points

The drill

Drill · Mark the list — 10 attempts at each of your 5 least certain shots (50 total). Pick five shots you are unsure about, throw ten of each, and write the make rate beside them. You now have a factual list rather than an impression — and on the course it tells you instantly whether the shot you are considering is one you own.
