Tournament & Competition

Points vs Cash Formats

Adjust strategy to what the format rewards.

Why it matters

How you get paid should change how you play, and most players never think about it. A points series rewards turning up and being consistent; a cash event with a cut rewards being above a line. Those are genuinely different incentives and they argue for different risk levels.

How to do it

  1. Find out before you enter: points, cash, a cut, a final round, how deep the payout goes.
  2. In a points format, consistency wins. Avoiding a disaster round is worth more than a brilliant one.
  3. Where there is a cut, know roughly where the line is and whether you are safely inside it.
  4. When you are comfortably inside a payout and the next place is far away, there is nothing to gain from risk.
  5. When you need strokes to reach a line, the arithmetic genuinely changes and more risk becomes correct.

Common mistakes

Playing every event the same way.The format sets the baseline. A points series and a one-off cash event reward different things.
Taking risks when already safely in a payout.Nothing to gain, something to lose. Consolidate.
Not knowing the payout structure until afterwards.Read it before round one. It is part of knowing what game you are playing.

Key points

The drill

Drill · Read the structure first — 1 event, payout and format read before round 1. Before your next event, read exactly how it pays and write one sentence on what that means for your risk level. It is five minutes, it is something most of the field will not have done, and it occasionally changes a decision worth several places.
