Mental Game

Visualization

See good shots before you throw them.

Why it matters

Seeing a shot before you throw it gives your body a target to organise around, which is a more useful instruction than a list of mechanics. It is also the part of the routine that most reliably survives nerves, because it is a picture rather than a thought.

How to do it

  1. Picture the whole flight: the release, the shape, where it peaks, where it lands and where it finishes.
  2. Include the feel, not just the picture. What the throw feels like when it goes right is half of the rehearsal.
  3. Do it from behind the lie, looking at the actual line, rather than abstractly.
  4. Keep it brief — a few seconds. A long visualisation becomes a delay, and delay is what nerves exploit.
  5. Visualise the shot you intend, never the one you fear. Picturing the OB line is an instruction to throw at it.

Common mistakes

Picturing what you want to avoid.Replace the thought rather than fighting it: look at the line you want and describe it to yourself.
Visualising only the sight and not the feel.Rehearse the physical sensation too. The body responds to that more readily than to a picture.
Taking so long that it becomes a stall.A few seconds. If it is longer than your rehearsal motion it has become a delaying tactic.

Key points

The drill

Drill · See it, feel it, throw it — 1 round visualising every shot for 3 seconds before stepping in. Three seconds of seeing the flight and feeling the throw, before every shot, for one round. The short fixed length is deliberate — it keeps it a part of the routine rather than something that expands whenever you are unsure.
