Disc Selection
Discs, Hand Sizes & Grip
Match rim shape to your hand and grip style.
Why it matters
A disc that does not fit your hand cannot be gripped consistently, and a grip that changes on every throw makes everything downstream of it unfixable. This is a particular problem for players with smaller hands, who are often sold wide-rimmed drivers that they physically cannot hold properly.
How to do it
- Try the rim width. A wide rim on a small hand means the fingers cannot wrap properly, which costs grip strength and spin.
- Try the rim depth. Deeper rims suit a power grip; shallower ones suit a fan grip and feel better for putting and approaches.
- Notice whether you have to adjust your fingers after picking the disc up. If you do, it does not fit.
- Match the disc to your grip rather than changing your grip to the disc.
- Lower-speed discs have narrower rims, which is another reason they suit players still building power — the fit is better as well as the speed.
Common mistakes
Key points
- Smaller hands often prefer thinner rims.
- Deeper rims suit power-grip throwers.
- Comfort in the hand improves consistency.
The drill
Drill · Pick it up ten times — pick up each candidate disc 10 times with your eyes closed. Pick a disc up ten times without looking and notice whether your fingers land in the same place each time. A disc that fits settles identically; one that does not needs adjusting, and that adjustment is a variable you will carry into every throw.
