The Three Shot Types

Hyzer, flat and anhyzer cover most holes.

Why it matters

Hyzer, flat and anhyzer cover the overwhelming majority of holes you will ever play. Having all three reliably is worth far more than another thirty feet of distance, because distance only helps on the holes that already suit your one shape.

How to do it

  1. Hyzer: the disc tilted with its top edge toward you, finishing left for a right-handed backhand. The most reliable shape in the game, and the one to default to under pressure.
  2. Flat: level release, straightest flight. Needs a disc whose stability matches your power or it becomes one of the other two.
  3. Anhyzer: top edge away from you, finishing right for a right-handed backhand. Opens up holes that bend the other way.
  4. Pick the shape from the hole, then the disc that produces it at your arm speed.
  5. When unsure, throw the hyzer. Its miss is predictable, which is what makes it the safe choice.
  6. Reverse left and right throughout for a left-handed backhand or a right-handed forehand.

Common mistakes

Owning one shape and bending every hole to fit it.Learn the other two in a field. One shape means every hole that does not suit it costs you something.
Reaching for an anhyzer whenever a hole bends right.Consider a hyzer aimed well right first. Anhyzer is the least repeatable of the three and should be chosen, not defaulted to.
Attempting a shape under pressure that you have not thrown in practice.Pressure is where your most reliable shape earns its place. Save experiments for the field.

Key points

The drill

Drill · All three, one target — 10 of each shape at one target (30 total). One disc, one target, ten hyzer, ten flat, ten anhyzer. Mark the three groups. Those clusters are your real shot shapes, and the gaps between them tell you which hole shapes you currently cannot cover.
